Bizen hidariuma chawan by Shibuta Toshiaki (Bizen-292) #1- #10

 

These chawan are special in that they have the Chinese character for horse etched on the side. The character normally faces to the right but is purposefully drawn back-to-front to create a play on words. "Hidariuma" means horse facing left and is traditionally regarded as a symbol of good fortune. The symbol is only be etched on chawan which have been created during the first firing of a new kiln in Bizen, so these pieces can be considered as limited editions.

 

This size bowl is usually used as a rice bowl in Japan, but it can be used as a large tea cup as well.

This bowl comes in a paper box.
