Echizen Ware (Echizenyaki)

Home > Echizenyaki

Counted among the six ancient kilns in Japan, Echizenyaki has been produced in Fukui prefecture, on Japan’s west coast, for over 800 years. Blessed with abundant nature and rich, good-quality clay, local potters are able to produce rugged pieces with a powerful presence.
The natural ash glaze created by the dynamic convergence of fire and air in the kiln captures the essence of the surrounding area whilst echoing its dramatically changing seasons.
The items shown on this webpage are all wood-fired.

Given the rustic texture and the many shade variations on the pieces, it is difficult to give an exact representation of the actual colors. Shades may appear lighter or darker according to the light and the computer format used. If you would like more information on the color of your chosen piece, do not hesitate to contact us and we will try to post more photos taken in different lights and from different angles.
