| Genuine Hakata doll - Abacus with two white mice The abacus is a symbol of prosperity in business. The mouse in his tradesman's coat is obviously rubbing his hands in delight at the prospect of more customers! Terracota dolls have been loved in Japan for over 800 years. The most famous of these are no doubt HAKATA dolls, crafted in Kyushu, southern Japan. Being in close proximity to Korea and China, Hakata was probably influenced by the ceramic traditions of both countries from very early times. The production of Hakata dolls as we know them today is thought to have been established as far back as the early 17th century, when feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa brought in craftsmen to build the city. The dolls burgeoned in popularity in the late Edo period due to the expertise of its craftsmen. They achieved further fame on the world stage in 1925 when Hakata dolls won prizes at the international exhibition in Paris. In 1976 the government designated Hakata dolls as a traditional national art and there are currently several master craftsmen preserving the tradition and producing original and exciting works. Hakata dolls are made of clay as opposed to the porcelain used for western dolls. The clay is fired at a low temperature resulting in a soft, unglazed finish and colors which grow deeper over time. These Chinese zodiac dolls are crafted with a cheeky sense of humor and bear gentle expressions.
