Mentori guinomi by Ohtani Masahiko#2
This guinomi is made by the "kurinuki" technique, ie. hollowed out of a block of clay. The sides are then cut to create interesting dents and contours. This is known as "mentori". This guinomi has been fired a total of 3 times. After the first firing,water-repellent liquid is added to the dents. The rest of the cup is covered with thick, white glaze and fired for the second time. Liquid gold is added and the piece is then fired for the final time. The gold touches give the finished guinomi has an opulent feel and provide a dramatic contrast to its overall rustic style.
