Oni Hagi teapot (kyusu) by Shibuya Deishi

The rounded body and handle of this teapot are covered in a thick white glaze, which because of the high proportion of coarse sand in the clay, forms random cracks all over the surface. This leads to an interesting contrast between the smooth glaze and the rough texture of the clay beneath. Around the rim, smooth edges have been eschewed in favor of jagged lines and the gnarled handle is a joy to touch. The interior with its inbuilt ceramic strainer is coated with a thin white glaze, which will in time allow for the penetration of tea deposits.
This is another unique characteristic of Hagi yaki, where signs of wear and use are considered to enhance the beauty of the piece rather than detract from its value.
