"Ginsai" matcha chawan by Kitamura Toshio - blue

This attractive chawan offers a study in contrasts, from the rustic grey of the base to the almost ethereal quality of the silver foil shimmering against the dynamic blue, The chunky shape is offset by the delicacy of the "ginsai" technique. Very cool and elegant.

The "ginsai" technique from Kutani is currently attracting a great deal of attention in the ceramic world because of its simple yet beautiful finish. Silver foil is attached to the porcelain base in a slightly overlapping pattern and fired. The pieces are then coated with glaze and fired again. Each piece bears its own unique pattern and the combination of the glistening silver and glaze result in shimmering pieces which beautifully reflect the light.

Kutani artist Kitamura Toshio has won numerous awards and has exhibited at many prestigious exhibitions in Japan.
