Engraved Shochikubai pattern teapot by Shunen II

An elegant teapot with windows cut out and engraved with shochikubai, i.e., pine tree, bamboo, plum which are a lucky symbol in Japan.

A thin layer of clay has been scraped away around the scalloped edges of the windows to reveal the red shudei clay beneath.
The textured engraving contrasts well with the smooth body of the pot.
