Kyoto/Kiyomizu - Autumn leaves vase

Kiyomizu pottery is a relative newcomer to the ancient world of Japanese pottery, not having been established until the end of the 16th century! At this time, Kyoto was the capital of Japan and the centre of politics and trade. The different classes of people who gathered in the city became interested in the tea ceremony, giving rise to a big demand in tea-ware and Kiyomizu pottery was set up to meet this demand. Kyoto is well known for being able to adopt various styles and giving them a special flavor of it's own and Kiyomizu pottery is no exception. Pottery techniques and designs from all over Japan as well as China and Korea were incorporated to make unique and original pieces and we can still see a wealth of different styles in present day Kiyomizu ware.
This beautiful vase by Fujihira Masafumi is unmistakably autumnal in flavor. Soothing shades of light-blue and cream culminating in a deep blue-green at the base bring to mind the crisp autumn sky.
Vine leaves handpainted in silver and gold are a refreshing departure from the usual russet hues of fall.
A fine way to bring a little of Kyoto's ambience into your home.
